Jimmy Stewart Relay Marathon

3rd Sunday in April, Griffith Park, CA, 8:00 AM Start. No longer run. Last one held in 2005.

Teams of 5 people each running 5.2 miles. Proceeds go to St. John's Medical Center. Good picnicing after you do your run turn. Start and finish near the merry go-round.

Julie Miller sez:
Jimmy Stewart is the largest 5 person team relays in the U.S.

Each team member runs a 5.2 mile loop in Griffith Park. The weather was cool, about 55 degrees, and overcast. This year, the race changed due to construction in Griffith Park. The start is near the merry-go-round and ranger station on Crystal Springs Drive. This year most of the course was on dirt (the horse trail) and there are hills. It's a prettier course than previous years. One caveat: parking was at the New Hope Church near the 5 freeway and Los Feliz Blvd. And the shuttle service was very slow. Many runners had to wait over and hour. My advice would be to get to the race really early (like 6:30 for the 8 a.m. start).

But the real reason to go the Jimmy Steward isn't to run; it's to eat. The race encourages you to picnic, and the loop course makes this perfect. You can sit with friends while you wait. The cost is $125 per team if you run with a running club or $500 if you a part of a corporate team.
